Services in detail

Our Tax Registration services

Each matter is scoped to what you need. You can instruct us on a single item below or on a wider mandate.

1

NTN registration for individuals

Setting up an IRIS profile for salaried persons, professionals and sole proprietors and completing registration.

Without an IRIS profile you cannot file a return, claim credit for tax deducted or appear on the Active Taxpayers List. Salaried employees, freelancers, landlords and sole proprietors come to us for a first registration. Others need us to repair a profile someone else set up badly, and in both cases we explain what filing obligations follow.

What's included

  • Registering on IRIS with the individual's CNIC, mobile number and email
  • Recording income sources and any business activity accurately from the start
  • Adding bank accounts and sole proprietorship details to the profile
  • Explaining what must be filed in the first tax year after registration

2

NTN registration for AOPs

Registering partnerships and other associations of persons, with the members' details linked to the record.

A partnership or other association of persons needs its own NTN, distinct from those of its members. Firms normally reach us right after signing the partnership deed, or when a bank refuses to open an account without the firm's tax number. We file the application with the deed and member details and record the principal officer correctly.

What's included

  • Filing the AOP application with the deed and any Registrar of Firms certificate
  • Entering each member's CNIC and profit-sharing ratio on the record
  • Naming the principal officer answerable for the firm's tax affairs
  • Amending the registration when partners join, retire or change shares

3

NTN registration for companies

NTN for newly incorporated companies, matched to the particulars on the SECP incorporation record.

Until a new company has its NTN, banks, customers and landlords will hesitate to deal with it. Founders and foreign investors usually instruct us the day the SECP certificate of incorporation is issued. We prepare the application from the incorporation papers, register the directors and principal officer, and choose activity descriptions that match what the company will actually do.

What's included

  • Filing from the certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles
  • Recording directors, principal officer and registered office without errors
  • Choosing business activity descriptions that reflect the company's real operations
  • Supplying banks with the registration evidence they need for account opening

4

Sales tax registration

Applications to the FBR for sales tax registration, including biometric verification and follow-up where a case is pending.

Sales tax registration is separate from the NTN and involves its own checks, which can hold up a business that needs to start invoicing. We handle it for new manufacturers, importers and distributors, and for applicants whose file has been stuck for weeks. That means a complete application, biometric and premises verification, and steady follow-up with the department.

What's included

  • Confirming whether registration is compulsory or simply advisable for the business
  • Collecting tenancy, utility bill and bank documents for the premises
  • Scheduling biometric verification for the owner, partners or directors
  • Pressing the FBR on applications awaiting a premises inspection

Provincial services tax registration

Registration with the Sindh Revenue Board, Punjab Revenue Authority, KPRA or Balochistan Revenue Authority, as the client's services require.

Service providers generally register with the revenue authority of each province where they provide taxable services, so some end up registered in three or four places. Consultancies, contractors, software houses and franchises often hit this when they open in a new city. We identify the authorities involved and file on each portal.

What's included

  • Working out which provinces' laws catch the client's services
  • Filing registrations on the SRB, PRA, KPRA or BRA portals as needed
  • Keeping provincial records consistent with the client's federal NTN profile
  • Registering under the ICT regime for services provided in Islamabad

6

Change of particulars

Updating address, activity, bank accounts, directors, partners or principal officer on IRIS and the provincial portals.

If your registered address, email or officer details are out of date, notices go unread and an ex parte order may be passed before you know anything is wrong. We update records after an office move, a change of directors or partners, or the addition of a new business line. Every amendment is checked on IRIS and the provincial portals once it is processed.

What's included

  • Updating address, email and mobile number so notices actually reach the client
  • Replacing directors, partners or principal officers after a change in management
  • Bringing business activity codes into line with what the business now does
  • Checking that federal and provincial records show the same particulars

7

Branch and additional business registrations

Adding branches, premises and new lines of business to an existing registration.

New branches, warehouses and factory units generally have to be added to existing registrations before taxable activity starts there. Growing businesses contact us when they expand into a new city or begin a new line of trade. We file the additions and deal with any inspection, while keeping the registration profile coherent as it grows.

What's included

  • Adding branches, godowns and production units to the existing registration
  • Recording new business activities under the current tax profile
  • Preparing for the department's inspection of newly added premises
  • Checking whether the expansion requires registration with another province

8

Deregistration and closure

Cancelling sales tax registration or closing a tax record properly when a business winds down.

Simply ceasing to file does not close a registration. Returns keep falling due, default notices keep coming and penalties can build up on a business that no longer trades. We help clients winding up a company, dissolving a firm or ending a taxable activity close each registration by the correct route and leave a clean record.

What's included

  • Clearing outstanding returns and liabilities before seeking cancellation
  • Applying to cancel sales tax and provincial services tax registrations
  • Lining up tax closure with the company's winding up or the firm's dissolution
  • Advising which records to keep, and for how long, after closure

Every taxpayer's dealings with the FBR run through its registration. An individual registers on IRIS against their CNIC, while a company or association of persons is issued an NTN, and that record becomes the reference for returns, withholding certificates and notices. Mistakes made at this stage are easy to overlook. A wrong business activity, an old address or the wrong principal officer usually comes to light later, as a missed notice or a return read against the wrong profile.

Businesses supplying taxable goods may also need sales tax registration, which brings extra verification such as biometrics and, in some cases, a visit to the business premises. Service providers usually register with the provincial authority where they operate, and some need registration in more than one province. Before a client starts trading, we work out every registration its activities will trigger.

A registration is not a one-time event. Changes of address, activity, bank account, directors or partners should be recorded on IRIS and on the provincial portals, and a business that closes should deregister rather than simply stop filing. The FBR and the provinces revise their procedures and document lists from time to time, so we confirm the current process with each application.

How does a newly incorporated company or a partnership get its NTN?

Our sales tax registration has been held up for verification. What happens now?

  4. 4

Do we register with a provincial revenue authority as well as the FBR?

How we help

A considered, practical approach

  1. 01

    Map registration needs

From the client's structure and activities, we list every federal and provincial registration that applies and the order in which to obtain them.

  2. 02

    Prepare the application

Documents are gathered and particulars drafted so the application describes the business as it actually operates.

  3. 03

    Manage verification

We handle biometric, documentary and premises verification and answer the department's queries as they come in.

  4. 04

    Maintain the record

After registration, particulars are kept up to date, with advice on amendments, suspension and deregistration when the need arises.

Key considerations

What to weigh before you act

  • 1The registered business activity affects how returns are reviewed, so it should describe what the business really does.
  • 2Sales tax and provincial services tax registrations are separate from the NTN and are triggered by different activities.
  • 3Outdated contact details can mean a statutory notice goes unseen, and an order passed in the taxpayer's absence is hard to undo.
  • 4The FBR and provincial authorities revise registration steps, verification and document requirements from time to time.
  • 5Stopping filing is not deregistration. A dormant registration can keep generating obligations and defaults.

FAQ

Tax Registration: common questions

Answers to the questions clients ask most often. Every matter turns on its facts.

Still have a question?

Speak with Sutra Law directly.

1What is an NTN and who needs one?

An NTN is the number the FBR uses to identify a taxpayer for income tax. Individuals generally register on IRIS with their CNIC serving as the registration number, while companies and associations of persons receive a separate NTN. Anyone required to file a return needs to be registered, as do most businesses. We complete the registration accurately so that later filings and correspondence go smoothly.

2Is sales tax registration the same as NTN registration?

No. The NTN covers income tax, while sales tax registration is a separate process under the Sales Tax Act 1990 for persons making taxable supplies of goods, and it involves more verification. Service providers may need provincial registration instead or as well. We identify which registrations apply and handle each application.

3Do service providers register with the FBR or a province?

Usually both: with a province for services tax, and with the FBR for income tax. Services tax is administered by the Sindh Revenue Board, Punjab Revenue Authority, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Revenue Authority and Balochistan Revenue Authority, while services in the Islamabad Capital Territory fall under federal law run by the FBR. Where a client must register depends on where its services are provided.

4Can registered particulars be changed later?

Yes. Address, activity, bank accounts, directors, partners and similar details can be changed through IRIS and the provincial portals, sometimes with supporting documents or fresh verification. Accurate details mean notices reach the right place and returns are read against the correct business profile. We make the amendments and check that they have been reflected on the record.

5Can a company be registered for tax straight after incorporation?

Yes. We often run tax registration alongside incorporation so a new company can open bank accounts, invoice and sign contracts without delay. Once the SECP issues the certificate of incorporation, we apply for the NTN and, where relevant, sales tax and provincial registrations. How long it takes depends on the authorities and any verification they require.
